PATHANAMTHITTA: Paulose Mar Milithios, Metropolitan of the Kunnamkulam diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, was unanimously elected successor to the Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan Baselius Mar Thoma Didymos I on Thursday.
The formal election of the Catholicos-designate was held at a meeting of the Malankara Syrian Christian Association, the 4,051-member parliament of the Church, at St. Gregorios Nagar, (Parumala seminary premises) on Thursday afternoon. Thursday’s meeting was an extension of the meeting held on September 21.
The Catholicos and metropolitans of the Church were escorted to the meeting venue in a colourful procession from the nearby St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s church at 1 p.m. The Malankara Metropolitan, who is also the president of the Association, presided over the meeting. Church secretary Alexander Karackal welcomed the gathering.
The Association resolved to increase the strength of the managing committee of the Church in view of the creation of new dioceses.
The Metropolitans Geevarghese Mar Osthathios, Stephanos Mar Theodosius, Mathews Mar Epiphanius, Philipose Mar Eusebius, Kuriakose Mar Cleemis, Thomas Mar Athanasius (Kandanad diocese), Youhanon Mar Milithios, Zacharias Mar Anthonios, Mathews Mar Sevarius, Zacharias Mar Theophilus, Youhanon Mar Chrysostomos, Augen Mar Dionysius, Paulose Mar Pachomios, Yakub Mar Ireneaus and Geevarghese Mar Coorilos were present.
The Catholicos-designate sought the blessings of the Catholicos soon after his elections. He was felicitated at a public meeting held on the Parumala seminary premises later. The Mar Thoma Metropolitan Philipose Mar Chrysostum inaugurated the meeting. The Catholicos presided. Nair Service Society general secretary P.K. Narayana Panicker; Archbishop of Changanassery (Syro-Malabar Church) Mar Joseph Powathil; Pro Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University K.P. Younuskutty; Geevarghese Mar Osthathios, senior metropolitan of the Church; Dr. Karackal; Fr. O. Thomas, clergy trustee of the Church; P.C. Abraham Padinjarekkara, lay trustee; addressed the meeting. Mar Milithios was escorted to the Catholicate office at Devalokom in Kottayam later.
